Update to Google Analytics 4

Support Headset

It’s time to switch to Google Analytics 4!

Google rolled out a new version of their analytics service called Google Analytics 4. This new version will replace the current one, Universal Analytics, on July 1, 2023. On this date, Universal Analytics will stop tracking new user data on your site, and all of your existing data will only be available for six months. (This grace period should give you enough time to archive your data if needed.)

To continue tracking user activity on your website, you must transition from Universal Analytics to Google Analytics 4.  If you would like to know more about this transition, please check out this post from Google.

Both Universal Analytics and Google Analytics 4 can track data at the same time. It is best to get started with Google Analytics 4 sooner rather than later so you’ll have data already collected and ready to review when Universal Analytics is no longer available.

Need to Update?  Please follow the steps below.

  1. Create a new Google Analytics 4 Property for your existing website in Google Analytics. Full instructions can be found at this link on Google Analytics Help.
  2. Once you create the new property, look for your Measurement ID (G-XXXXXXX) by following this link.
  3. Submit a support request to Message Agency with your Measurement ID so we can install your Google Analytics 4 property on your website. Once installed, data will begin tracking within 24-48 hours.
  4. Submit another support ticket if you need us to download all of the historical traffic data associated with your Universal Analytics account. This will be sent as a spreadsheet format for your records.
    1. NOTE:  We will need access to your Google Analytics account to download this information. Follow the directions under “Add Users” to give Message Agency access if we aren't listed as a user.

That's it!  Please note that, with this new version of analytics, there are very limited automated and templated reports out of the box. We are working on creating standard reports to help our support clients get their tracking data right away, so please stay tuned for this initiative.

As always, if you have any questions please feel free to contact us!
